How to Search Civil Dockets
Paid real-time data comes from the CoCourts Colorado Courts Record Search. It carries register-of-actions entries from District and County Courts statewide. A case number gives the cleanest match. Names are riskier. A name search can return several people with the same or similar names. It can charge you even when nothing turns up. CoCourts covers civil, small-claims, domestic, and other listed case classes, subject to access limits. It does not hand over filed documents, though.
When the main need is a hearing date, use the free Colorado Judicial Docket Search instead. Need the complaint, signed judgment, decree, parenting plan, letters, or a will? File the official request form or contact the Montezuma Combined Courts clerk for those items.
- Identify District Court or County Court from the caption and case class.
- Search the register by exact case number, or use a carefully checked party name.
- Match the court, year, class, sequence, and public party roles.
- Read filing and setting entries in date order, with the newest event last.
- Request the exact signed document when its terms matter.
Montezuma County Civil Docket Jurisdiction
Civil claims sit in two Montezuma County courts. County Court takes claims below the current $25,000 jurisdictional ceiling. It also handles small claims and protection orders. District Court holds general civil jurisdiction, along with domestic relations, probate, and other specialized matters. Both operate through Montezuma Combined Courts. A shared clerk and address do not make their dockets interchangeable, though.
The Colorado Judicial county-court jurisdiction page posts the official County Court limit. It also lists its case categories.
That split guides the choice. Take a lower-value claim or a small claim to County Court, and bring a general-jurisdiction civil matter to District Court.
Montezuma County Civil Small Claims
Small claims stay in Montezuma County Court. Colorado has no justice-of-the-peace system like Texas. Municipal courts do not hear them. The case class may use S, while other civil matters use CV or C. A valid local number follows the year, class, and sequence structure, though the exact value must come from court papers. A safe example of the pattern is 2026S123, drawn from the format rather than a made-up party's case.
Quick answer: A Montezuma small-claims docket is kept by County Court through the unified Combined Courts clerk.
Skip the Cortez, Dolores, and Mancos municipal sites for an ordinary private civil claim. Their courts keep city ordinance matters only. Searching the wrong court is a common reason a valid civil case looks missing.
What a Civil Docket Shows
A civil register of actions tells the story of a case. It can list the filing date, court and division, public party roles, case type, service or return events, answers, motions, minute orders, settings, judgment activity, satisfaction, and appeal. It is no substitute for the complaint or a signed order. Some captions stay closed. Protected details can be withheld too.
| Case Number | Year, civil class, and sequence tied to District or County Court. |
|---|---|
| Parties | Plaintiff and defendant, or petitioner and respondent, when public. |
| Filings | Complaint or petition, service, answer, motions, and notices by event title. |
| Settings | Hearing or trial date, time, division, type, and later reset activity. |
| Outcome | Dismissal, judgment, closure, reopening, satisfaction, or appeal event. |
| Documents | No images in the vendor register; request copies from the court. |
Montezuma County Civil Docket Events
Civil entries mark distinct steps. A complaint or petition opens the matter, service records delivery of process, and an answer responds to the claim. A motion asks the judge to act. A minute order notes brief court action, a signed order carries the full ruling, and a notice of setting supplies a court date.
- Default activity
- An event tied to a missed response or appearance; the signed order determines the result.
- Judgment
- An enforceable civil decision whose full terms are in the signed document.
- Satisfaction
- A record that judgment obligations have been satisfied.
- Vacated setting
- A former hearing was canceled; the case itself was not necessarily dismissed.
- Appeal
- A separate review path with new filing and record events.
Typical civil flow: Complaint or Petition › Service › Answer or Default Activity › Motions and Settings › Hearing or Trial › Judgment › Post-Judgment Events.
Montezuma County Civil Judgment Records
Three judgment records do different jobs. An Order for Judgment records what the judge decided. A Transcript of Judgment is a $25 court product used to evidence a judgment as authorized. A Certificate of Satisfaction is its own $20 record. When exact terms or legal effect matter, never rely on a short register label.
| Product | Purpose | Official amount |
|---|---|---|
| Order for Judgment | Signed decision and terms | Copy fees apply |
| Transcript of Judgment | Separate judgment evidence product | $25 |
| Certificate of Satisfaction | Records satisfied obligations | $20 |
| Certified copy | Clerk-authenticated document | $20 per document plus copying |
Copies run $0.25 per page. Ask the clerk to quote the total, since certification does not automatically include the copying component.
Types of Civil Cases on the Docket
Case type controls where a matter lands. Montezuma County civil court dockets span several tracks. County Court's fiscal year 2024 civil filings included money cases, forcible-entry-and-detainer matters, name changes, protection-order matters, replevin, and other limited categories. District Court holds the major civil disputes and the specialized case classes.
- County Court money claims and other civil cases under $25,000
- Small claims and name-change matters
- Protection-order and risk-protection-order proceedings
- District Court general civil cases
- Domestic relations, probate, and specialized proceedings, subject to access limits
The category name helps you pick a court. It also decodes the case-class letters, but it does not guarantee remote access to every caption, filing, or document.
Montezuma County Civil Docket Scale
Montezuma County Court logged 583 civil filings in fiscal year 2024. Money cases led with 298. The court also recorded 153 domestic-abuse protection-order matters, 64 forcible-entry-and-detainer cases, and 47 risk-protection-order matters. It added 19 name changes and one replevin. That fiscal year ran from July 1 through June 30.
Those counts show why a party name alone fails. Search by case type and court. Each track carries its own forms, events, and access rules.
Settings and Hearings on Civil Dockets
Civil dockets in Montezuma County carry many kinds of hearing entries. Expect notices of setting, status conferences, motions hearings, protection-order hearings, small-claims trials, bench trials, jury trials, and later review dates. For a date-based hearing list, start with the free state docket page. CoCourts works better when you want the full event chronology. If two sources disagree, the signed notice or order, confirmed directly with the court, controls.
Continuances are common. A register may keep the old date and simply add a later event. Always read through the newest entry. "Vacated" cancels the former setting. It does not, by itself, end the lawsuit. For divisions, resets, and date confirmation, see the full Montezuma County court calendar walkthrough.
Montezuma County Civil Protected Files
A case can be valid and still missing from a vendor result. Probate, adoption, paternity, juvenile, mental-health, dependency, and parts of domestic-relations matters may be restricted by law. Deposited wills, genetic tests, medical information, financial account numbers, and custody reports are examples of protected material. The clerk can withhold or redact these.
Need a decree, parenting plan, separation agreement, support order, letters, will, or petition? Use the official Record/Document Request Form. Bring proof of entitlement and photo identification if asked. Keep in mind that absence from CoCourts proves nothing about whether a file exists. Call the clerk rather than guessing from a similar name.
Montezuma County Civil Historical Files
Older Montezuma County civil files may sit in off-site storage. The state form allows an actual-cost retrieval fee. Research and redaction can cost $30 per hour. That rate is billed in 15-minute increments after the first hour. A broad demand for every page may cost more. It can exceed the price of one ROA, order, or judgment product.
Before contacting the Colorado State Archives court-record collection, ask the local clerk which custodian holds your year and case class. Requests go through in person, the online form, phone, email, or mail. Do that once instructions are confirmed. The Combined Courts main line is 970-565-1111. The records office sits at 865 North Park Street, Suite 100, Cortez.
Note: The state form targets a response within three business days. It does not promise final delivery of a retrieved or redacted file.
Public Access to Civil Dockets
Civil court records follow Colorado Judicial access rules, not the county government's administrative public-records process. Open Montezuma County civil dockets may be inspected at reasonable times. They may also appear through approved remote access. Sealed documents and restricted case types stay limited. The clerk can apply local procedures to protect files and office work.
Key Rules:
Chief Justice Directive 05-01 governs public, remote, sealed, and excluded court records.
Colorado’s access-policy schedule identifies restricted case types, documents, and identifiers.
Children’s Code section 19-1-304 restricts specified juvenile records.
Commercial register data is not the official record and can be incomplete. For a correction, an authenticated result, or any document behind the register entry, use the filing court.
Montezuma County Civil Docket Appeals
Where does an appeal go? A judgment from Montezuma County Court generally appeals to District Court. A District Court civil judgment ordinarily goes to the Colorado Court of Appeals. The review path creates its own docket events: a notice of appeal, designation of record, transcript activity, briefs, and mandate. An appellate number is separate from the trial-court number.
An appeal event does not erase the trial register. Nor does it show reversal. Read the later appellate disposition and any order sent back down to the trial court. When tracing a matter, keep both numbers and both courts. That preserves the chain. It runs from the Montezuma County civil docket through the reviewing court's own record.
